Description

Pictured here is a program from a production of Giacomo Puccini's opera Tosca by the Vilna Yiddish Opera in Yiddish accompanied by Vilna's Symphony Orchestra. Tosca, which premiered in Rome in 1900, is based on Victorien Sardou's 1887 French-language dramatic play. The story is a melodrama set in Rome in 1800 with the Kingdom of Naples' control of Rome threatened by Napoleon's invasion of Italy. It contains depictions of torture, murder and suicide, as well as some of Puccini's best-known lyrical arias.
