This course will present to students the latest research findings on the history of Hasidism, from the eighteenth to the twenty-first centuries. The course will involve reading of primary sources but will also be based on the newly published Hasidism: A New History. Topics to be covered will include:
1) Was the Baal Shem Tov the founder of Hasidism?
2) The Maggid of Mezeritsh: the Real Founder?
3) Bratslav Hasidism: A Deviation or True Belief?
4) Chabad and the Dynastic Principle
5) Nineteenth-Century Golden Age
6) Resurrection: Hasidism in the Post-Holocaust World
David Biale is the Emanuel Ringelblum Distinguished Professor of Jewish History at the University of California, Davis. He is YIVO’s Fall 2018 Jacob Kronhill Visiting Scholar in East European Jewish History.
